Meta tags are the basic way to start the SEO process. They play an important role in defining the quality and appropriateness of your content; hence, it is always asked to preach the right form of Meta tag.

Apart from the positive effects, Meta tags may result in negative impressions, which will go way more opposite than what you’ve prepared yourself off. One way to escape the negative Meta tags is by skipping the use of unnecessary tags and sticking to core minimum usage of the Meta tag. This will help you to shorten the code and add meaningfulness to the code.

Further, this article focuses on the 3 types of Meta tags, which, once or more, every SEO has come across. Beginning with;

1. Good Meta Tags:

Good Meta tags should be present on every page. Here is a list of important Good Meta tags which are a must to possess:

a. Meta Content-Type:

This tag defines the character set on your page and is advised to be on every page. In case you choose to leave it, then be prepared to face the consequences like:

  • Impact on-page appearance in browser results
  • Visits on your page will decline
  • Popularity will not hike instead cover the steep slope of the downfall.

Following are the code options to implement it:

<meta http-equiv=”Content-Type” content=”text/html; charset=utf-8″ />

<meta http-equiv=”Content-Type” content=”text/html; charset=utf-8″ />

b. Title:

The title doesn’t have meta but carries important information and plays an important role in search engine optimization. Hence, go for a title that is unique and suits the content best.

c. Meta Description:

This is where most SEO failures start. Meta Description is not given enough importance and always underestimated, whereas this should be given equal importance. This is the only way that will define if the users will bother visiting the content you have to offer.

The best Meta description is the one with a minimum of 160 characters with suitable content.

d. Viewport:

The viewport is significant from the mobile users’ point of view. Your page should be Mobile view friendly and facilitate the mobile users to visit the website without eating up much of their internet. The standard tag for this is:

<meta name=viewport content=”width=device-width, initial-scale=1″>

2. Indifferent Meta Tag:

There are a few websites which should have the tags mentioned below:

a. Robot Meta Tag:

It is not necessary to implement the Robot Meta tag until you want to change the indexing command into an index and link the following command to follow. Also, if you want to noindex but want to follow the links, then you should add the following tag with the only noindex. Code to implement it:

<meta name=”robots” content=”noindex” />

b. Specific bots (Googlebot):

This tag comes handy when you want to give a specific bot instruction like noodp and noydir. Though the search engines have mastered this instruction in case you think it is required on your website, then go ahead with it. There are websites where the implementation of this tag is necessary, and it should be kept in mind that before you add this tag, you have added Robot tag.

c. Language-tag:

The language tag is required when your audience is overseas, and you need to define the main language of the website.

d. Geo:

This tag is supported by Bing and not Google. This has 3 subtypes; place name, position (latitude and longitude), and region.

<META NAME=”geo.position” CONTENT=”latitude; longitude”>

<META NAME=”geo.placename” CONTENT=”Place Name”>

<META NAME=”geo.region” CONTENT=”Country Subdivision Code”>

e. Keywords:

Though keywords are said to be important, there is only a small ratio of success, which depends on them. Including this is dependent upon you. Keep it if you think this has helped you capture attention, but if not, then try dropping this for once.

f. Refresh:

Do not focus here. This is the least productive way to attract viewers. Though always go for server-side 301 redirects.

g. Site Verification:

The site must carry the verified with either Google or Bing.

If the site is not verified, then begin the verification with the help of DNS and external files supported by Google or simply link your Google Analytics account with the site. Verification with the help of Bing can only be done with the help of XML file and Meta tag.

3. Unworthy Meta Tags:

These tags are not important and should not be given a thought. Here is a list of such tags and attributes:

a. Author/Web Author:

This is used to name the author of the page. This is not necessary, so it is recommended to not use it.

b. Expiration and date:

Expiration denotes when the page will expire, and date denotes when the page was made.

Expiration is not as important as the date. Keep the date up to date by using an XML sitemap, a this is noticed as the more useful pattern.

c. Copyright:

The viewers don’t care if the page has proper copyrights or not, as long as you satisfy the user, you should stop giving a thought about mentioning the copyright everywhere possible.

d. Abstract:

A tag used for placing an abstract or summary of the content. Mainly used by educational sites.

e. Distribution:

This tag is used to define the type of audience which can access the content; by default, available for everyone. If the page is not password protected, then it will be set as global. Until you have an intention to provide a password-protected page, drop this tag off the page.

f. Generator:

Used for recording what program has been used while creating the page. Just like the Author, this is useless.

g. Cache control:

This tag is used in keeping a record on when and how the page is cached in the browser. Doing this in an HTTP reader may derive the best results.

h. Resource Type:

This tag defines the nature of the page. Like is it’s a Document aka doc, or an image in the form of png, jpg, gif, etc.;

Don’t dwell on this because the DTD declaration has been set up to save your time by doing this automatically.
